If you’re shopping for a mid-size luxury SUV in Ontario and want to run most of your weekday errands on electricity, the 2026 Volvo XC60 T8 plug-in hybrid answers six questions before you even visit the dealership.
The T8 delivers 58 km of all-electric range from a 14.7 kWh usable battery (18.8 kWh total). For a typical round-trip Ontario commute under 30 km each way, that covers the full day on electricity, with buffer to spare. Volvo’s own data shows that plug-in hybrid drivers globally cover roughly half their total distance on electric power.
When the battery is depleted, the 1.969 L turbocharged inline-4 takes over, drawing from a 71 L fuel tank. The combined fuel economy in gas mode is 8.5 L/100km, identical for city and highway. Charging from a 16A outlet takes about 5 hours. The combined efficiency rating for the T8 is 3.5 Le/100km.
The B5 AWD mild hybrid produces 247 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque, reaching 100 km/h in 6.9 seconds. The T8 pairs its 312 hp engine with a 143 hp electric motor for 455 hp and 523 lb-ft of torque combined, hitting 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. That 2.1-second gap is noticeable in daily driving, not just on paper.
The Polestar Engineered trim uses the same T8 powertrain. Both have a 180 km/h top speed. The added battery mass brings T8 curb weight to 2,120 kg versus 1,883 kg for the B5, and ground clearance measures 200 mm on the T8 compared to 209 mm on the mild hybrid.
The T8 plug-in hybrid offers 468 L of cargo space with the second-row seats up, and 950 L with seats folded. The B5 mild hybrid has slightly more: 483 L seats up and 965 L folded. The 15 L difference comes from battery pack placement. For most families, 468 L handles groceries, strollers, and weekend gear without issue.
The cargo floor width between wheel housings is 1,055 mm, and the rear opening at floor level is 1,020 mm.
The plug-in hybrid lineup runs Core, Plus, Ultra, Polestar Engineered, and Black Edition Ultra. Safety equipment including City Safety, Whiplash injury protection, Lane Keeping Aid, Oncoming Lane Mitigation, BLIS with Cross Traffic Alert, and Rear Collision Warning is standard across all five.
Core is the starting point: 11.2-inch centre display, 12.3-inch driver display, heated front seats, panoramic roof, wireless phone charging, keyless entry with hands-free power tailgate, and a rear park assist camera.
Plus is where the feature set clicks for most families. It adds the 360° camera, Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving, full park assist (front, rear, and sides), and air purifier with remote cabin pre-cleaning. Harman Kardon Premium Sound is available as an option. For drivers who want daily-driver convenience without stepping into luxury-trim pricing, Plus is the trim to consider seriously.
Ultra adds a head-up display, standard Harman Kardon audio, front seat ventilation, power passenger seat with memory, power side bolsters, power 4-way lumbar support, power cushion extension, and a tailored dashboard. Active air suspension is available as an option on Ultra. If you spend long stretches in the driver’s seat, Ultra’s comfort additions make a real difference.
Polestar Engineered keeps the T8 powertrain and layers on Polestar’s proprietary chassis tuning, Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio as standard, Contour front seats, and 21-inch forged wheels (with 22-inch Polestar forged available as an option). The chassis is calibrated for a sportier feel, distinct from Ultra’s comfort-oriented air suspension setup. This is the trim for drivers who want the XC60 to handle sharply without giving up family practicality.
Black Edition Ultra brings the T8 powertrain with a blacked-out exterior package: high-gloss black front grille, black door mirror covers, black side window trim, 21-inch black edition wheels, automatic door locking, and standard Harman Kardon audio. It trades Polestar’s chassis tuning for a style-first personality.

For Ontario families who want daily electric driving, the T8 Plus is the practical breakpoint: 360° camera, Pilot Assist, and the electric range are the features that earn their keep every day. Core works if you’re focused on keeping costs down while still getting the T8 powertrain. Ultra makes sense if you’re a high-mileage driver who values the head-up display and ventilated seats.
Polestar Engineered is the trim for drivers who want a sharper chassis feel and are willing to pay for Bowers & Wilkins audio and forged wheels. Black Edition Ultra is a straightforward proposition: T8 performance, a distinct look.
The 2026 XC60 T8 plug-in hybrid covers most Ontario commutes on electricity, seats five with 468 L of cargo space, and delivers 455 hp when the road calls for it, across five trim levels with distinct feature profiles.
