To earn a Top Safety Pick+, the highest rating from the IIHS, a vehicle must receive the highest possible score in every collision test. These include the driver-side small overlap test, passenger-side small overlap test, moderate overlap test, side crash testing, roof strength testing, and head restraint tests.
Moreover, to get the highest safety rating, a vehicle must also get the highest possible grade for driver assistance safety and headlight performance.
The overlap tests are particularly challenging. They simulate the results of a collision between the corners of the vehicle and an object.
