Volvo has revealed the latest iteration of its flagship SUV, the 2025 XC90, showcasing significant advancements in hybrid technology, design, and safety features. The updated model boasts an impressive electric-only range of over 70 kilometres (WLTP), positioning it as a leader in the luxury hybrid SUV segment for the Canadian market.
The new 2025 Volvo XC90's plug-in hybrid powertrain allows for zero-emission daily commuting for most drivers. Volvo's data indicates that approximately half of the distance covered by their latest plug-in hybrid vehicles is driven on pure electric power. For longer journeys, the hybrid system works in tandem with a petrol engine, extending the range beyond 800 kilometres.
Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo Cars, emphasized the XC90's versatility: "Whether it's comfort, space, luxury, versatility or hybrid efficiency you look for, the XC90 delivers on all accounts."
The exterior design has been refreshed to align with Volvo's fully electric models, reflecting the company's transition towards electrification. Inside, the 2025 Volvo XC90 features a revamped interior with a more practical layout and an advanced user experience similar to Volvo's EX90 and EX30 electric SUVs. A larger, high-resolution central touchscreen enhances functionality and enables over-the-air updates.
Volvo has optimized the interior based on customer feedback, improving storage solutions and adding a more conveniently placed wireless phone charger. The cabin showcases contemporary Scandinavian design, incorporating premium recycled materials and enhanced lighting for a luxurious ambiance.
Safety remains a top priority for Volvo, with the 2025 XC90 equipped with an advanced safety cage and a comprehensive suite of active safety features. These include systems to prevent lane drifting, running off the road, and collisions with vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and large animals.
The XC90's ride comfort has been enhanced with improved suspension as standard. An optional air suspension system adapts to road conditions 500 times per second, optimizing comfort and stability. Additional insulation reduces wind and road noise, contributing to a serene driving experience.
For audiophiles, the 2025 Volvo XC90 offers the Bowers & Wilkins High Fidelity audio system, capable of replicating various acoustic environments.
The plug-in hybrid XC90 T8 remains a key model in Volvo's diverse product portfolio, supporting the transition to a fully electrified future. Volvo offers a mild-hybrid variant which combines a turbocharged engine with a small electric motor to provide ample power and a 15% reduction in fuel consumption versus the former T6 engine.
Production of the new 2025 Volvo XC90 is scheduled to begin in late 2024, with first customer deliveries expected around the end of the year. Orders are now being accepted, making the XC90 an attractive option for those seeking a future-ready luxury SUV.
