The XC60 is Volvo's midsize member of the luxury crossover lineup. There are many strengths that owners like about it, including safety, comfort, advanced powertrains, refined styling, and more. We can't forget about its versatility, which offers convenience for everyone, from families to the lone adventurer.
The XC60 isn't alone in its segment, but we are happy to place it against any competitor. Here, we give you three reasons to purchase an XC60 over the Audi Q5.
The Volvo XC60 offers more options
The XC60 pulls ahead of the Q5 with more powertrain choices. The base XC60 Momentum features the T5 engine, a 2.0-litre that generates 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Volvo's T6 powertrain is also available in the Momentum and is standard in the remaining gas trims, and it contributes 316 horsepower. The XC60 also offers a hybrid powertrain, but we will discuss this later.
The non-S Q5 lineup offers only one powertrain. The Q5's 45 TFSI engine produces 261 horsepower—slightly more than the XC60's T5—but the difference is seen in print and felt less in the vehicle. At the SQ5 level, a 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 outputs 349 horsepower, but the price point also increases compared to the XC60. However, this is not the best engine in the comparison.
The Volvo XC60 Recharge delivers the best power and efficiency
The XC60 Recharge isn't a typical PHEV. Rating at 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque, it sets itself apart from the Q5 hybrid with similar fuel economy, but with much more power and torque – the Q5 TFSI e only has 362 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.
The Volvo XC60 shines in safety ratings, as well as interior design
The XC60 features a much more refined interior design, but also carries Volvo's safety tradition with honours. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) ranks the XC60 with a Top Safety Pick+ designation.
Although the Q5 also receives high marks, there are differences in two key areas that put the XC60 ahead. The XC60 rates higher in driver head protection, among others. Volvo remains among the best designers of outstanding vehicles that aim to protect you and your family.
