Volvo Cars is taking their partnership with Google one step further with the introduction of the Volvo EX90. This groundbreaking new car brings together sensors such as lidar, cameras, and radars to understand its environment and provide a higher level of safety for drivers. To build on this technology, Volvo Cars has taken advantage of Google's HD Maps – a highly detailed mapping system that offers unparalleled clarity and detail of both roads ahead and those further away. By incorporating Google's HD Maps into the Volvo EX90, Volvo Cars is setting the standard in the automotive industry for safer and smarter driving solutions.
“The addition of Google HD Maps in our future car line-up marks an expansion of our strategic collaboration with Google, reflecting our commitment to work with technology leaders,” says COO and Deputy CEO Javier Varela. “Implementing Google HD Maps in our upcoming cars will help us offer our drivers a more enjoyable driving experience and in future contribute to the introduction of safe autonomous driving.”
By integrating Google's HD map, Volvo is now able to fuse the industry-leading sensor set within the Volvo EX90 with precise lane-level and localization data. This facilitates semi-autonomous features such as lane change assistance and Volvo Cars' Pilot Assist technology which are supported by HD Map's lane markers and other objects identified by the map.
Furthermore, this information is processed through NVIDIA DRIVE AI Platforms Xavier and Orin to ensure safe L2+ and L3 assisted driving capabilities on select roadways. By combining data from HD Maps with exterior sensors, lidar from Luminar, and software developed by Zenseact into one cohesive platform, Volvo is now able to provide drivers with a secure and comfortable experience that can be trusted wherever they go.
“Building on our long history of mapping the world, Google’s new HD map is designed specifically for automakers and provides comprehensive lane-level and localization data that is crucial to powering the next generation of assisted and autonomous driving systems,” says Jorgen Behrens, VP and General Manager of Geo Automotive, Google. “We’re excited to continue partnering with leading automakers like Volvo to improve the safety and comfort of drivers everywhere.”
The Volvo EX90 is setting the bar for autonomous driving with their collaboration with Google and use of HD Maps. This cutting-edge technology promises unprecedented comfort, safety, and accuracy to drivers everywhere - making it easier than ever before to get from point A to B without sacrificing detail or convenience.
By fusing sensors, data processing platforms like NVIDIA DRIVE AI Platforms Xavier and Orin, lidar from Luminar, software developed by Zenseact and more into one cohesive platform - Volvo has been able to offer a secure experience that can be trusted in any environment.
With this partnership between two industry leaders paving the way forward for safer roads ahead – we look forward to seeing what other innovative solutions are yet to come!
