Ontario drivers planning a highway run to the cottage or across the province want fewer stops, not more decisions about charging. The 2026 Volvo XC60 B5 AWD pairs a turbocharged engine with a mild-hybrid system that never needs a plug, built for exactly that kind of driving.
The B5 AWD uses a turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-four engine (1,969 cm³) paired with an Integrated Starter Generator, Volvo’s mild-hybrid unit that assists the engine under load. Output lands at 247 hp with 266 lb-ft of torque, sent through an 8-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels.
That torque arrives between 2,000 and 4,500 rpm, which is why the B5 AWD reaches 100 km/h from a stop in 6.9 seconds. It is enough for confident merging and passing on a two-lane highway without the added complexity of a plug-in system.
The Integrated Starter Generator, rated at 13 hp, recovers energy during braking and coasting, then feeds it back to the engine to smooth power delivery and reduce strain during acceleration. It does this automatically, with no external charging and no driver input required.
On a steady-speed highway cruise, that assistance means the engine works less to hold speed. The 8-speed automatic keeps the engine turning in its efficient range at highway speeds, rather than hunting for gears the way a powertrain tuned mainly for city stop-and-go might.
This is different from Volvo’s T8 plug-in hybrid, which pairs the same 2.0-litre engine with a larger electric motor and an 18.8 kWh battery. The T8 needs a plug to unlock its 58 km of electric range. The B5 AWD never does.
The B5 AWD is rated at 7.8 L/100km on the highway, its most efficient rating, against 10.0 L/100km in city driving and 9.0 L/100km combined. Paired with the 71-litre fuel tank, that highway rating works out to a theoretical range of roughly 910 km before a fill-up.
That figure assumes steady highway conditions. Real-world range will vary with load, terrain, weather, and how much city driving factors into a trip, but it gives a useful benchmark for planning a fuel stop on a run to cottage country or across the province.

For readers who charge at home and mostly cover short distances, the T8’s 58 km of electric range can handle most days on electricity alone, and its 455 hp combined output adds real quickness. But it asks for a plug and a charging routine built into daily life.
The B5 AWD skips that step. Fill the tank, drive, and let the mild-hybrid system handle the rest. For long, steady highway stretches where fuel stops matter more than daily electric commuting, that simplicity is the deciding factor.
The 2026 model year brings an over-the-air update that reworks the infotainment layout, putting maps, media, and phone controls on one home screen so drivers do not have to leave navigation to change music. A contextual bar also surfaces outside camera views automatically at low speeds, useful when pulling into a rest stop.
Pilot Assist, Volvo’s driver-assist suite, is available starting at the Plus trim, not on Core, along with a 360-degree camera. Higher trims add four-zone climate control and front seat ventilation, both useful on a long summer drive across Ontario.
The 2026 XC60 B5 AWD pairs a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine, a mild-hybrid Integrated Starter Generator, and a 71-litre tank into a highway-focused package that reduces fuel stops without asking for a plug.
