Ontario cottage season has a way of revealing exactly what your SUV can and can’t do. A weekend at the lake means coordinating a loaded roof rack, a trailer at the hitch, and enough cabin space to keep everyone comfortable for three hours each way. All three 2026 Volvo SUVs handle this kind of trip, but they handle it differently, and the right one depends on trailer size, passenger count, and how much powertrain choice matters to you.
For any Ontario driver towing a boat or travel trailer, the braked towing rating is the number that matters. A braked trailer has its own braking system; an unbraked trailer relies entirely on the tow vehicle. All three Volvos share the same 1,653 lbs (750 kg) unbraked limit, which covers canoe trailers and small utility loads.
The gap opens up with braked trailers. The XC40 B5 AWD tops out at 3,527 lbs (1,600 kg). The XC60 comes in at 3,483 lbs (1,580 kg) across all its powertrains. The XC90 jumps to 4,960 lbs (2,250 kg) on both the B6 mild hybrid and T8 plug-in hybrid. That 1,433 lb gap between the XC40/XC60 range and the XC90 is the difference between a mid-size fishing boat and a 19-foot bowrider with a trailer brake controller.
Note: the XC40 edges the XC60 by just 44 lbs (20 kg) on braked towing. That is a rounding-level difference, not a reason to choose one over the other.

Two things in that table are worth pulling out. First, the XC40’s 75 kg roof load limit is 25 kg less than the XC60 and XC90. A pair of kayaks, a rooftop cargo box, and roof rails can quickly approach 60-70 kg; the XC60 and XC90’s 100 kg limit gives more working room. Second, the XC90’s 223 mm of ground clearance helps on unpaved cottage laneways, noticeably more than the XC40’s 205 mm or the XC60 T8’s 200 mm.
The XC40 uses a 1.969 L turbocharged four-cylinder B5 mild hybrid producing 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It is the only powertrain on offer for the XC40, and it returns 9.1 L/100 km combined.
The XC60 carries three options. The B5 mild hybrid matches the XC40’s engine size and horsepower but delivers 266 lb-ft of torque. The T8 plug-in hybrid combines a 1.969 L turbocharged four-cylinder (312 hp, engine-only) with a 143 hp electric motor for a total of 455 hp and 523 lb-ft; it carries a 14.7 kWh usable battery and offers 58 km of electric range.
That 58 km covers most suburban Ontario commutes before you ever touch the highway on cottage Fridays, and the T8 gets to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. The Polestar Engineered variant shares the T8’s powertrain figures.
The XC90 B6 uses a 1.969 L turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder producing 295 hp and 310 lb-ft. The XC90 T8 plug-in hybrid delivers the same combined 455 hp and 523 lb-ft as the XC60 T8, with 53 km of electric range and the same 14.7 kWh usable battery. When towing, plan on the engine carrying most of the load; the electric range is most useful on the city portion of your route.
For the XC40: If your trips centre on tight campgrounds, one or two passengers, and a small boat or utility trailer up to roughly 3,500 lbs (1,587 kg), the XC40 is well suited. Its 11.4 m turning circle and 4,440 mm length make it noticeably easier to back into a narrow cottage driveway or crowded campground site.
With rear seats folded, the 1,432 L of cargo space handles gear generously for two people. The 9.1 L/100 km combined fuel economy and the smaller fuel tank of 54 L mean you will be stopping to refuel more often on longer routes, a trade-off worth knowing before a long drive north.
For the XC60: If you are running a family of four, a mid-size boat or travel trailer, and want to choose between a straightforward mild hybrid and a plug-in with 58 km of electric range, the XC60 is the better fit. The seats-up cargo of 483 L (B5) is meaningfully larger than the XC40 for weekend bags and gear, and the 100 kg roof load limit opens up more roof rack configurations. The T8’s instant torque is useful when pulling away from a steep boat launch.
For the XC90: If your trip involves a heavier boat or travel trailer over 3,500 lbs (1,587 kg), or a family of up to seven that needs third-row seating, the XC90 is the right destination. The 4,960 lbs (2,250 kg) braked tow rating puts a substantially larger category of trailer within reach. With 1,950 L of maximum cargo space (B6), roof racks become optional rather than necessary for most trips. The 223 mm of ground clearance and 2,984 mm wheelbase add stability on longer hauls with a loaded hitch.
The 2026 XC40, XC60, and XC90 each approach Ontario cottage season from a distinct angle: compact agility with a lighter trailer, mid-size balance with a powertrain choice, or full towing capacity and seven-seat room for larger groups and bigger boats.
