The XC90 is a luxury SUV that offers more luxury, room, innovations, and safety compared to other vehicles in its class. Buyers also have a selection of several powertrains, including the recent addition of the XC90 Recharge PHEV. It also is an IIHS 2021 Top Safety Pick +, carrying on the tradition of well-designed Volvo vehicles.
To help you understand more about the XC90, we compare it to a competitor--the Mercedes-Benz GLE.
The 2021 Volvo XC90 is the most efficient and offers an outstanding hybrid
The XC90's base powertrain, the T5, delivers 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It also features an impressive fuel consumption rating of 11.5 L/100 km in the city and 8.4 L/100 km on the highway. This is the most efficient petrol engine in the comparison. The GLE's base engine, a 255-horsepower 2.0-litre turbo, bumps up its rating to 12.4/9.0 L/100 km. The XC90's turbocharged T6 is available with all XC90 gas trims and produces 316 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.
The GLE's subsequent models, the 450, AMG 53, and AMG 63 S have respective horsepower numbers of 362, 429, and 603. However, there are costs to this that we will cover later.
The XC90 Recharge offers the best efficiency out of any model in this comparison. The hybrid system delivers 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque while achieving an outstanding fuel consumption rating of 9.1/8.4 L/100 km (city/highway). Its surprising power is better than the GLE 450 and competes with the AMG 53.
The 2021 Volvo XC90 offers more for the price
The GLE's AMG models may have flashy horsepower figures, but you will have to pay up to double the price of a base XC90 to access models such as the AMG 63 S. The MSRP for a base XC90 is also over $5,000 less than a base GLE.
Each XC90 offers a more spacious interior that opens up possibilities for your lifestyle. Behind the second row, the XC90 features up to 1,071 litres of cargo volume compared to 630 litres for the GLE in the same configuration.
