Advanced in tech with plenty of room, the 2021 XC90 is a luxury crossover that is ready for many lifestyles. The Volvo XC90 begins with Scandinavian design that ensures purpose with every detail. Smart connectivity and electrified powertrains are only getting better, keeping this model series at the forefront of the segment. The versatility of the interior design makes available four, five, six, and seven-seat configurations, helping you create the best XC90 for your needs.
We are pleased to compare the XC90 to the competition and help you make the right choice. Here, we compare it to the 2021 BMW X5.
The 2021 Volvo XC90 offers best efficiency
Volvo is proud to offer powertrains that not only flex horsepower, but also save resources. The Momentum model features the T5 engine that produces 250 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The T5 earns a fuel consumption rating of 11.2 L/100 km in the city and 8.3 L/100 km on the highway, making it the most efficient gasoline powertrain between the XC90 and BMW X5.
The XC90's T6 engine increases horsepower to 316 and torque to 295 lb-ft. Although the X5's xDrive40i model has a bit more power with 335 horsepower, T6-equipped XC90 trims have a much better fuel consumption ratings of 12.2 L/100 km in the city and 8.5 L/100 km on the highway.
The 2021 Volvo XC90 outduels the X5's in hybrid performance
The XC90 Recharge is an advanced hybrid model that features a supercharged four-cylinder engine and electric power. Both systems combine to produce 400 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque.
The BMW xDrive45e is the Recharge's hybrid competitor. It comes somewhat close in performance with 389 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque, but it really lags behind the Volvo in fuel efficiency. The xDrive45e attains a rating of 12.2/10.6 L/100 km, whereas the XC90 earns a much more attractive 9.1 / 8.4 L/100 km.
Although the X5 M50i includes the most power out of any model in this comparison, the price and fuel consumption are also the highest--by far.
The XC90 is much more than great styling and advanced powertrains. It offers up to four seating arrangements, creating a personalized interior that doesn't waste space and adapts to your needs. It also deploys advanced driver assistance features that the X5 doesn’t have, like the Pilot Assist and intuitive Sensus infotainment system.
